Voting in Cobb County: Alcohol sales on Sunday??? Please Respond

I know this has nothing to do with Mass Media and Politics but I am doing a policy analysis paper for my Senior Seminar class and its over the alcohol sales on sundays in Georgia, specifically, Cobb County. So, classmates, I come to you all and ask your opinion. If you got the opportunity to vote (if you live within Kennesaw, Austell or Symnra city limits) today for or agaisnt allowing alcohol sales on sunday from 1230 P.M. to 1130 P.M.

This has been a topic up for a potential vote for years now, there are arguments for and against allowing this to pass. Interestingly, I have not been able to find out when these cities will allow it to take effect if approved but Cobb County as a whole will vote on March 6, 2012 during a special election in the Presidential candidate primary. Another question I ask is this: Are the cities that voted today, if passed and taken into effect immediately at an advantage compared to other cities in Cobb or Cobb County as a whole? I ask this because potentially these cities will have months of "outsiders" coming into the city limits purchasing alcoholic beverages resulting in more revenue for that city. Are members/alcohol distributing establishments of Marietta, Powder Springs and Acworth at a disadvantage?

  1. I am not against having Alcohol Sundays. Although revenue can increase in the cities who adopt the change, "outsiders" who purchase the alcohol may not be that much higher than just an average day. There is that possibility but to what degree. We will never be able to determine or conclude this idea until this change takes effect. I guess the way I look at is that if you live in Acworth, are you going to travel to Hiram just because the change took effect there? If you know in advance of a "party" are you going to travel to your local Kroger to make your purchase? Or are you going to travel 20 miles just to buy that alcohol? Personally, I would plan in advance and if not, I could see where Marietta, Powder Sprigns, and Acworth could be at a disadvantage.

  2. I personally never thought of the revenue aspect of this, it will be interesting to see if the revenue aspect of this will cause their to be more of an incentive to allow alcohol sales. I personally agree with Sunday alcohol sales because I feel that people will somehow get alcohol regardless of the law. I live in Acworth, in Cherokee county, where sales are allowed, but personally if I do buy alcohol it is typically not in Cherokee. It is just what is convenient for me. What will be interesting to me, I don't know specifically how this works, or what specific areas were voted on in Cobb county, but in the Kennesaw city limits I know the alcohol sales are already distorted. I was also shocked that the law goes into effect next week, they aren't wasting anytime, most likely for the revenue. I think it will leave certain cities at an advantage if they sell alcohol on Sunday, but I personally do not think people necessarily purchase alcohol near where they live.
